Elizabeth has been raised in propriety, and in 1944 Richmond there are things a lady simply doesn't do. Her grandmother Mary - Nan to those close to her - does them all. She drinks what she wants, speaks when she wants, and doesn't hesitate to help a colored boy on the street with no concern for who might see. When Nan gets sick and needs full-time care, she invites Yankee nurse Ariel Brandt into their lives. Smart, funny and beautiful, Ariel is a lot like Nan in a lot of ways, and Elizabeth is drawn to her at once. As her feelings for Ariel grow out of her control, Elizabeth finds herself torn between her own desires and the deeply-ingrained rules of the society in which she lives. Her brother at war, a new suitor trying to court her, and Ariel keeping a safe distance, Elizabeth is charged with an errand. Nan wants her to travel to New Orleans to find someone she once knew and pass along a wooden box that holds an important letter. Can the unexpected journey into Nan's past help Elizabeth find her future?

I simply loved this book. It is so well written, the authors prose is beautiful in its description of the characters, of the south in the WWII years, and of the love story. It is sweet coming of age story of a young woman brought up in a society where one does not deviant from the norm unless one plans on facing the consequences. Wonderfully rich characters makes this a must read.Product details

Club Storyville Riley LaShea Books Reviews
MILD SPOILERS
This was a lovely, well-written story. The author has a sure feel for historical characterization, and for the most part the story is told with a light touch. The characters are both sympathetic (although Ariel moreso than Elizabeth); the settings are rendered with authenticity, and the discussions around race feel appropriate to the time.
There are a few anachronisms throughout, nothing glaring but some phrases that did give me pause (a character worrying whether her body could "handle" her feelings; wanting to give someone some space; "push[ing] our boundaries"; a character being "into" fancy things). A more serious criticism might be that in an effort to make clear to modern audiences how terribly scary and threatening a time the early part of the century might have been for many LGBT people, the author has overcompensated after while, the narrator's fear and low self-esteem make it difficult to see her from the outside; to see what Ariel *did* see in her.
Also, I felt the ending went on several chapters longer than necessary. I understand wanting to let readers know these characters had a long, happy, full life together. To do that, the author telescopes out from the specific time-frame of the story to cover the "rest" of their story in a few brief chapters so we can see the changes that did take place. The problem with that is the story is finished. It's been told well enough that we could imagine those things for ourselves. Tather than reassuring us that the characters did get their happily-ever-after - and being able to imagine those things on our own - the ending as it stands takes that away from us; forecloses on any of those possibilities. It tries to skim over almost a century's worth of civil rights... but we know these lessons from textbooks. The point of fiction is to bring those events to life. Having achieved that end, the book is over. A lighter touch - the same assured handling executed throughout the rest of the book - would have served better here.
Overall though, the writing was unusually solid there were no places I found myself thinking, This character would never have said that! or (worse) I simply don't believe this. The sex scene felt authentic and was well-written without skimping on details - or phoning it in, as so many authors seem comfortable doing. I'm happy to find a new author and looking forward to reading more of her work. Thanks for a good story from a challenging historical period.
Loved this.
Took me back to my grandmother's era, Those I doubt my southern Baptist GM ever frequented a Club Storyville.
The author got the world as it was or at least as I remembered through my childhood observations of my elder's conversations and behaviors.
Fun and entertaining read.
Such a great love story by a very talented and accomplished author! You will not be disappointed.
It was a very good reading, except, sometimes too much description that could be avoided. The story ended just beautifully. You could see clearly how the gay movement evolve.
Fantastic read. A coming-of-age love story that is set amidst a tumultuous time for America. The social pressures of war time 1940s on a southern American family create a rich environment, through which one young women's narration carves a personable and engaging story.
I highly commend Riley LaShea on the sensitive and knowlegable way she wrote about loss and grief within a family. Her characters are captivating and her narrative flows off the pages.
I could not put this book down and can't wait to start another book from this author!
I'm speechless.
There aren't enough words to describe how I feel about this book. I cried, I laughed, I sighed. It made me incredibly sad and happy and just... UGH! This book just gave me all the feels and the writing is perfect. If I had to recommend only one lesbian book to somebody, this would be it.
